SOS! SAVE OUR SEQUOIAS!

This week, KOTUS worked with the Kansas Sierra Club to brainstorm who the next postcard recipients should be. Thanks to the help of Karin Meiners, Boys & Girls Club 4th and 5th graders sent more than 50 postcards to Ryan Zinke, Secretary of the Interior, saying “SOS! Save our sequoias!” Check out their postcards here.

Giant Sequoia Facts:

They grow on the northwest coast of the United States.

There are two kinds of redwoods: Sequoia sempivirens and Sequoiadendron giganteum.

These trees are the largest living organisms on the planet.

They can grow to a height of over 300 feet.

They can weigh as much as 2.7 million pounds.

They can live to be 4000 years old.

They absorb more oxygen than any other trees on the planet.

They are home to more than 200 birds and many other animals.

The government wants to cut down 75% of them and we can’t let that happen.

And here is Ryan Zinke’s address so you can download a KOTUS postcard and send your own SOS message to him:
